Marilyn Miller has been passionate about animals since she was born, and over the years has been an outspoken proponent for protection of animals and the habitat on which they depend. She has never been without a pet. During the ten years she lived in Los Angeles, she became a personal friend of the founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Alex Pacheco and worked on many successful animal rights campaigns. Her interest in environmental protection solidified after moving to Oregon in 1996 when she joined the “Round Table” led by Mel Jackson. She began a career in photography under the tutelage of Dave Stone. In 1998 she attended theDesert Conference at Malheur Field Station where she met conservationist and birder Craig Miller, and promptly fell in love. They were married 18 months later. Marilyn and Craig currently have a 17 ½ year old cat named “The Pineal Gland”, a 9 ½ year old white Embden Goose named “Fuzzy-Bird” and a three year old Brown Chinese Goose named “Affie-Goose. They are both passionate vegetarians! Marilyn has a fun birthday rule: Every year for her birthday, September 14, she has to leave the state she is living in for a week and travel somewhere. Most of her birthday trips have been by herself, full of adventure and very remote. Since then Marilyn has become a consummate birder and active environmentalist. She has co-led birding trips for numerous organizations including American Birding Association, Central Oregon Audubon, JuniperGroup Sierra Club, Oregon Natural Desert Association, and Paradise Birding. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the local Sierra Club group.
Marilyn currently serves on the Board of theEast Cascades Bird Conservancy.
Marilyn Miller has co-led birding trips for the following organizations: American Birding Association Central Oregon Audubon, Deschutes Basin Land Trust, High Desert Committee Juniper Group Sierra Club Oregon Chapter Sierra Club, Oregon Natural Desert Association, Paradise Birding. Marilyn was a member of the Oregon Sage Grouse Strategy team for one year.
Marilyn is one of the consultants for the BLM for the work in progress "Basin and Range Birding Trail".
Marilyn has written articles on cavity nesters, geese, etc.
Marilyn has hadphotographs published in national birding magazines. Her habitat photos appear on the Oregon Breeding Bird Atlas CD-Rom. Her photos of birds have appeared in other publications and other people's slide shows.
