Growing up in southern Idaho farm country, Sherrie Pierce has always had birds in her psyche be it Song Sparrows nesting outside her bedroom window, Yellow-headed Blackbirds while fishing in the local marshes or listening to Great Horned owls while camping in the Central Idaho hills. Moving to Oregon when she was 18 to attend OSU and the U of O, she has been an Oregonian for the past 48 years, 40 0f those living in Redmond where she loves to back-yard bird, garden and tend a flock of chickens. In 1969, one of her seventh-grade students shared his concern, and his research, about the decline of the Peregrine Falcon. That sparked a continuing awareness of the importance of human action and conservation. Another seminal event was reading Even Cowgirls Get the Blues by Tom Robbins, not for the cowgirls but for the Whooping Cranes. She still reads anything he writes. After retiring from Redmond High School in 2000, birding has become more of a passion rather than a casual outing. She is lucky to have a great group of birder friends who are just as "birdy" as she They know who they are. Sherrie has belonged to Audubon for 25 years, then ECBC and now ECAS. Her interests are in the Education projects and expanding birding opportunities everywhere.
